Study Advice Needed

ATTENTION ALL RETURNED MISSIONARIES

So, I was just reading the second chapter of Preach My Gospel, which is talking about how to study the scriptures effectively. One point it emphasized was recording thoughts and inspirations for later reference. I was wondering what some of you guys have found is effective or not effective as far as how to organize your spiritual journal.

I'm the type of person that likes to alphabetize or date my notes, but I realize that it might be more beneficial to do it a different way: maybe by topic? Anyway, this is where you come in. I would love to know what you did, or saw others do that looked like a good idea. Comment away!

(If you can't comment because you don't have the required accounts then just comment on my Facebook! [however, if you don't have a google account you should get one, just because it's handy :) ])

  1. The best way (I think) to organize your studies is to sort by topic, since that will be the most useful when you go back to find past notes. The only hard part of that is that you don't know how much room to leave in between each topic. Most people on my mission would write the notes in their scriptures and color code them by topic. So in the part about Charity, the whole margin would be covered in pink text. In the part about Faith, it would be blue, and in other areas about Faith, there would be more blue. So your eyes would get used to blue meaning Faith. And if you ran out of room, I know some people who would just get extra paper and stick it in there where they needed it.

  2. The most important thing is writing it down. Dating it helps but also titling the entry will help organize it a bit. You can also have a table of contents on the first few pages of your Journal and organize it that way. Doesn't matter how you do it, as long as you keep record of your personal revelations you will know how to help other people that are having the same issues as the ones you received revelation for. Keep it safe and treat it sacred :)

  3. I've found that recording thoughts/scriptures/questions by topic helps, but it can also be useful to just go in chronological order by what you're reading, like begin with notes and thoughts from 1st Nephi. Both methods work, you could do either of them or both, it just depends on what will help you remember what you learn and where to look if you forget.
